The Non-GMO Summit is taking place in less than two weeks’ time (7-8 October) in Frankfurt, Germany and will bring together international players from across the Non-GMO value chain: retailers, producers, traders and scientists as well as politicians.

The Summit, hosted by the main associations representing the Non-GMO food and feed sectors in Europe, will have a strong focus on the current state of play of EU regulation on New GMOs (NGTs/New Genomic Techniques). High-level political representatives - Dr. István Nagy, the current President of the EU Council for Agriculture and Fisheries and German Agriculture State Secretary Silvia Bender - will deliver opening addresses.

The Summit comes at a crucial moment in the legislative process for New GMOs, with the negotiations currently stalled on the European Commission’s proposal for a far-reaching deregulation of New Genomic Techniques. Whilst the European Parliament has agreed its position and backed labelling and traceability of NGTs, the AGRIFISH Council has failed to find a common position. At the Summit, participants will hear from experts on the current status of the legislation and what it will mean for the Non-GMO sector.

Given the direction of the EU’s proposed legislation on NGTs the focus of some of the panel discussions and presentations will make for vital understanding for those wanting to continue to produce and sell food without GMOs. Betina Jahn from SGS (the world's leading testing, inspection and certification company) will be discussing audit strategies for NGTs in the feed and food supply chain. It will also be the opportunity to understand more on detection methods of NGTs: Odd-Gunnar Wikmark, Director of the DARWIN project, which is doing pioneering research in this area, will be giving a presentation.

As a global Summit, with attendees expected from the EU, Brazil, the USA, Ukraine and Moldova, speakers will put the spotlight on the Non-GMO market as a whole – with the latest developments, trends and market outlook to be presented. Helmut Gaugitsch, Head of Programme Biodiversity & International Cooperation, Umweltbundesamt- Environment Agency Austria will moderate the Summit.

ENGA, along with the other major Non-GMO industry associations -  Verband Lebensmittel ohne Gentechnik (VLOG), ARGE Gentechnik-frei, Donau Soja and ProTerra Foundation – is proud to co-host the Summit.
