ENGA Newsletter No. 22: September 2024

Dear Readers,

In less than two weeks, the second Non-GMO Summit will open its doors in Frankfurt, Germany. On the evening of 7 October 2024, we will start with a dinner together, on 8 October we will focus on the most relevant topics the Non-GMO sector currently has to discuss: the state of play of the EU’s (de-) regulation plans on New GMOs (NGTs/New Genomic Techniques) and how to deal with it, as well as the latest developments, trends and outlook on the worldwide Non-GMO markets. If you haven't registered yet, you are warmly invited to do it now.

Regarding the main three Non-GMO crops on the EU market, our fourth Non-GMO Market Report, quarterly published by ENGA, and produced in cooperation with Donau Soja and the ProTerra Foundation, shows that the EU Non-GMO market is expected to remain well supplied with soy, maize and rape in the current 2024/25 season.

Our third article fits perfectly with our Summit focus: The European Food Industry Raises Its Voice In Favour of Labelling And Transparency of NGTs. 376 companies, among them REWE group, SPAR Austria, dm-drogerie markt and Biocoop, came together to sign an open letter to EU Agriculture Ministers to call for labelling of New GMOs, transparency and freedom of choice through the entire value chain in order to continue Non-GMO production.

The Non-GMO Market Report: The Latest Data On The Main Three Crops Revealed

ENGA has just published the fourth edition of its Non-GMO Market Report, which is the only report of its kind on the Non-GMO Market in Europe, shining a spotlight on the overarching trends in terms of supply, demand and harvests of the main Non-GMO crops: soy, maize and rapeseed. The report highlights the abundant supply of maize and soy on global markets which has put downward pressure on the prices of the Non-GMO crops.

The European Food Industry Raises Its Voice In Favour of Labelling And Transparency of NGTs

In recent months there has been a groundswell of business support for maintaining transparency and labelling of GMOs, with an open letter to EU Agriculture Ministers garnering support from 376 companies across Europe - many of them household names. This open letter was handed over, earlier this month to Dr István Nagy, current EU Council President for Agriculture and Fisheries, during a meeting in Budapest between representatives of the signatory companies and Dr Nagy.
