"Ohne GenTechnik" seal celebrates 15 years in Germany

2024 marks 15 years of Non-GMO products in Germany, labelled with the “Ohne GenTechnik” (“without genetic engineering”) seal. And this important anniversary year coincides with a successful year of sales for Non-GMO products in Germany, with sales up 8.8. percent on 2022 levels.

Non-GMO products are clearly in demand in Germany: 2023 was a record year for sales, which reached approximately 17.4 billion euros. The German Association for Food without Genetic Engineering (VLOG), ENGA founding member, is responsible for assigning and monitoring the seal (a green diamond shaped label), which was launched in 2009 by the then Federal Minister of Agriculture Ilse Aigner (CSU).

Dairy and eggs – a success story

Milk and dairy products account for the largest share of consumer spending on food carrying the "Ohne GenTechnik" seal in 2023, with 11.9 billion euros of sales (68 percent). Poultry meat products accounted for €3.4 billion (20 percent), eggs for €1.5 billion (9 percent) and other products for €0.5 billion (3 percent). At 12.3 percent, the sales increase was highest for eggs compared to the previous year.

A celebration of 15 years

VLOG will mark its milestone anniversary with an extended special edition of its expert conference VLOG .:. Forum, on 20 June 2024 in Berlin. The event will include a review and outlook for "Ohne GenTechnik" (“without genetic engineering”), presentations and discussions on prospects for the seal, the current status of the EU New GMOs de-regulation debate, New GMO detection research and the corporate initiative for freedom of choice for GMOs in food.
