ENGA Newsletter No. 19 : April 2024

Dear Readers,

After the AGRIFISH Council failed to find a common position by the end of March - the condition to start the trilogue with the EU Commission and the EU Parliament - we will not have a New GMOs legislation in this legislative period. This is - because of too many unsolved questions - the best result.

What (French) retailers want is succinctly articulated by Lionel Desencé from Carrefour: The “precautionary principle must apply, and there must be total transparency regarding the marketing of these products, so that our customers can make an informed choice.”

Since the beginning of this year and running until 2027, two research projects for the development of detection methods for New GMOs have been funded by the EU – somewhat ironic given the European Commission's long-standing argument (following industry's narrative) that New GMOs are indistinguishable from conventional plants and therefore detection is not feasible.

It remains for me to congratulate our founding member VLOG (German Association for Food without Genetic Engineering) on its 15th birthday and brilliant sales figures for Non-GMO products and to invite you, dear readers, to our second International Non-GMO summit on October 7 and 8, 2024 in Frankfurt/Main, Germany. Here you will find the pre-registration link, via the Summit website you can find out more and read about last year’s Summit and, finally, follow the LinkedIn page for updates.

Please support us by distributing this newsletter within your network. To regularly receive our newsletter and get all the latest updates on Non-GMO in Europe, subscribe. Also keep in touch with ENGA by following us on LinkedIn and X.

Please feel free to inform your partners and networks about the work and goals of ENGA, and to increase our strength on the European market and towards the European regulatory bodies by having as many business platforms and companies as possible join our cause.

Kind regards,
Heike Moldenhauer
Secretary General
