ENGA Newsletter No. 33: March 2026

Dear Readers,

Do you know what you’re eating? This is the slogan of the eye-catching campaign, launched by ENGA’s German member VLOG. Should the European Parliament approve the deregulation of New GMOs (New Genomic Techniques, NGTs) on 18 May, this question will become increasingly relevant, as the labelling requirement would then no longer apply to the vast majority of New GMOs. Buoyed by a record turnover of 18 billion euros in 2025, VLOG’s head of press and public relations explains why products labelled as Non-GMO are a good solution.

The International Non-GMO Summit 2026 (13 May, Frankfurt), co-organised by ENGA, could not come at a more important moment. This year’s industry gathering will provide practical, actionable guidance to help those across the value chain to prepare for Europe’s New GMO rules. Find out how Non-GMO value chains can continue to exclude New GMOs via strengthening risk assessment for feed and food, with particular attention to origin, sourcing patterns and international trade routes and learn on whether extending Non-GMO labelling from animal products into plant-based products would be a welcome move for shoppers. We cordially invite you to register!

We conclude with a report from Switzerland: there, a citizens’ initiative has secured enough votes to trigger a national referendum on stricter GMO regulations.

Non-GMO Summit 2026: Preparing for Europe’s New GMO Rules

Just days before the European Parliament’s decisive vote on New GMOs, the Non-GMO Summit 2026 will bring together key actors to assess what deregulation could mean in practice. From new approaches to safeguarding Non-GMO value chains to fresh consumer insights on labelling, the Summit offers a timely opportunity to prepare for a changing regulatory landscape. We hear the latest thinking on excluding New GMOs in a future deregulated scenario and about what consumers will expect when it comes to labelling.

Do you know what you’re eating?

A bold new campaign by VLOG is cutting through the noise with a simple question: do consumers really know what’s in their food? As the EU edges closer to deregulating New GMOs, the campaign taps into strong public demand for transparency—reinforcing the growing importance of clear, credible Non-GMO labelling at a critical political moment.
