ENGA Newsletter No. 32: January 2026

Dear Readers,

Unfortunately, European Parliament’s ENVI Committee voted yesterday, 28 January 2026, to approve the provisional trilogue agreement on New Genomic Techniques (NGTs or New GMOs).

According to the agreement, category 1 New GMOs (94 % of all plants in the pipeline) would be placed on the market without any risk assessment and without mandatory labelling or traceability.

The Parliament's lead committee is thus following a vote by the Member States, which expressed their approval at the end of last year. Should Parliament’s plenary endorse the ENVI vote in the coming months, a new law will regulate the use of New GMOs. ENGA, of course, will urge the European Parliament to reject it and stand up for a core right of consumers and business: knowing what is in our food.

And now we come to the good news: The first supermarket chains, Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd in Germany, have clearly stated that they do not want to stock any products containing New GMOs. This is a promising start – now other supermarkets across Europe should follow suit.

How can Non-GMO value chains remain Non-GMO after the draft law is adopted? This year’s International Non-GMO Summit (13th May 2026, in Frankfurt) will provide practical, actionable guidance. Find out more about two key presentations from two key speakers bringing complementary scientific perspectives to the fore: what is the state of play in the development of detection methods and which New GMOs are present in different markets and in development pipelines? We cordially invite you to register!

Regarding the Non-GMO supply of soy, maize and rapeseed, our latest Market Report confirms that the EU Non-GMO crop markets remain broadly stable in the current 2025/26 marketing year, despite shifting trade flows and persistent price pressure. The quarterly report, now in its 9th edition, is produced in collaboration with Donau Soja and The ProTerra Foundation.

Non-GMO Summit to Highlight Vital Issues for Non-GMO Production in Europe: Detection of New GMOs & The Market Reality

As the EU moves closer to a possible deregulation of New GMOs, the 2026 International Non-GMO Summit will address two critical questions for the Non-GMO sector: how New GMOs can be detected, and where they are already emerging on global markets (hint: there are hardly any, anywhere!). At the Summit in Frankfurt (13 May 2026), leading experts will present the latest scientific advances in New GMO detection and provide essential market intelligence on New GMO crops already in development or cultivation worldwide. Our article spotlights two of the Summit's exciting speakers.
